SEO is a Lot More than Optimizing HTML Code

Contrary to popular believe, SEO is a lot more than just optimizing HTML code. In fact, it is just a really small part of your success. But to get all the other work to have the biggest impact, you do have to get this part right!

There's a list of things on that search engines like Google just love. These are things like:

  • Menus
  • Breadcrumbs
  • Other Types of Internal Links
  • Content

Notice that 3 out of those 4 are about links. Google set the standard when they started focusing on links. Their PageRank algorithm even made the whole (SEO) world go nuts about links and tons of money were made (and wasted) through link advertising. Now-a-days, the focus is on conversion rates, which is in fact a lot more valuable. More on links in next chapters.

The other point is related to what actually can be found in your website: Content! Many SEO consultants will tell you that Content is King. But what that really means is as much a secret to them as it is to you. The most common explanation is that Great Content gets you more positions in the search engines because search engines love content.

So now it went from "Content is King" to "Great Content". That actually still doesn't mean anything. If you keep asking you will receive lots of explanations and properties of "Great Content" and you might even end up believing that you know what great content is. If that's true you will find out when you're behind your PC or laptop, ready to start writing.

Creating Great Content is a tough task and here's a little secret:

How great content is, is determined by the READERS! Not by you or a consultant, but simply by the READERS!

You can follow all kinds of rules but it doesn't really matter what you create, if the readers don't like it, then it simply said, sucks, and it was a waste of time creating it.

Notice that I use the word "create" and not the word "write". Great content is created! Creating content is a lot more than just writing a text. It is things like:

  • The things that matter to your visitors
  • Visual appeal
  • Structure
  • Positioning in the page
  • Focus
  • Images
  • Links
  • Ease of use
  • Navigation

Oh boy, that starts to look a lot like SEO, doesn't it?

YES it DOES! Once you understand what Great Content really is you will be really on your way to optimizing your website.

Oh and before I forget, content plays a huge role in Conversation Rate Optimization. You know that you created great content when you see the number of sales or contacts per 100 visitors increase.

And when people like your content, they start to link to it!
