This tag is abused by those who don’t understand SEO. In some sites you will find lists of hundreds of words and short phrases in this tag with pretty much all the words that can be found in the whole website. That’s the exact opposite of what this tag is meant for.
One of the most important points in SEO is focus. Optimization in many ways is just a matter of focusing: In this case, focusing a page on 1 specific subject. Therefore the meta keywords tag needs only a couple of words that are focused on the content of the page.
Here are some simple rules for the meta keywords tag:
The meta keywords tag is not very important. Google for example claims they don’t use it at it all. Yet it is not a bad thing to use in your web pages. Just don’t put a lot of work in them. It’s mostly just a short list of words that you use in the title and some variations of those words, like plurals.
